Q: What are the entry requirements for prospective trainees?
A: All prospective trainees should have achieved a standard equivalent to grade 4 in GCSE Maths and English. Those who intent to teach pupils aged 3 - 11 should also have a grade 4 or equivalent GCSE in Science. All entrants must hold a first degree from a United Kingdom higher education institute or an equivalent qualification.
Q: What about entry requirements for overseas applicants?
A: Overseas applicants should contact NARIC regarding qualification equivalencies.
Q: Where will I be placed for my training?
A: You will be placed in two of our partner schools or academies, these will be contrasting provisions to provide you with the best possible experience and help you gain valuable experience by encountering their unique challenges and observing their key strengths.
Q: How long will SCITT training take?
A: You will train for one full academic year
Q: How much will it cost to train?
A: Tuition fees are currently £9250 for QTS with PGCE but these are subject to change
Q: What qualification will I earn on completion of the training?
A: On completion, you will gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which is a requirement in England & Wales to work as a teacher. Trainees also graduate with a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). The PGCE elements of the programme also carry 60 credits towards a Masters qualification which is accredited through Sheffield Hallam University.
Q: How can I apply?
A: All applicants must apply through DfE Apply (https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-teacher-training) Our provider code is 2EX
Q: How are applications considered?
A: As an IT provider we are given permission to recruit in a number of subject areas. To fill our allocated numbers, we follow a rigorous selection process, however once we reach our maximum allocation the applications will close. Due to the DfE Apply system there can be a delay of up to 40days between our last allocated place being offered and the course applications being closed on DfE Apply.
Q: What is the selection criteria?
A: Upon receipt of each application, we undertake a rigorous selection process which conforms to the ITT Entry Criteria. We also look for additional skills as demonstrated in your personal statement and references. In addition to the entry criteria set out above, we also have regards to and conduct the following checks on our applicants:
- DBS check
- The Children's barred list search
- Prohibition order search
- Prohibition to teach in another country of the EEA check
- A criminal check for overseas applicants
- Childcare disqualification checks
- Health & physical capacity to teach assessment
All applicants will also be asked to provide photo ID and proof of your right to residence.
Every applicant that fulfils the selection criteria is invited to an assessment at one of our partner schools (this may not necessarily be the school you are ultimately placed if successful). The assessment will include a formal interview, a pre-planned presentation, a teaching & learning task and a subject knowledge assessment.
All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their assessment and interview via DfE Apply.
Q: Do you have over-selection criteria?
A: As identified above, places are allocate don a timely basis as per DfE Apply. If two or more applicants apply for the last place, the applicant with the greatest score at assessment will be offered the conditional place on the programme.
Q: Is the training centre accessible for trainees with disabilities or additional needs?
A: The training centre is located at the South Pennine Academies Business & Training Centre. The facility has two clearly marked, dedicated disabled parking places directly outside the building. The training rooms are located on the ground floor where there is also an accessible toilet area and kitchen facilities.
